Tincture Strength Calculator
Tinctures are labeled as weight-to-volume ratios. A 1:2 tincture means 1 g of herb per 2 mL of menstruum; 1:5 is weaker and typical of commercial tinctures. This tool converts between strengths.

Common ratios
- 1:2 fresh plant — hot-percolation or long-maceration; professional herbalist strength.
- 1:3 dried — common practitioner ratio for dried herb.
- 1:5 dried — the USP default and most commercial tincture strength.
- 1:10 dried — weak; suitable for potent herbs (lobelia, belladonna) where low dose matters.
Alcohol percentages
Most constituents extract well at 40-60% alcohol. Resinous herbs (myrrh, propolis) need 80-95%. Water-soluble mucilaginous herbs (marshmallow, slippery elm) need 20-30% or a glycerite instead. The calculator assumes a reasonable menstruum for typical herbs.
