How they work

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts obtained through steam distillation, cold pressing, or CO2 extraction. They contain the volatile aromatic compounds that give plants their characteristic scents and many of their therapeutic properties.

Quality is verified through GC/MS testing (gas chromatography / mass spectrometry), which identifies the precise chemical composition and ensures purity. Key constituent families include monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, phenols, and oxides.

Essential oils should always be diluted before topical application, typically at 1–3% in a carrier oil. They should never be applied undiluted to the skin or taken internally without professional guidance.
