Keynote Symptoms

Jealousy and suspicion are central. Lascivious mania — exposes person, makes obscene gestures. Low muttering delirium with picking at bedclothes (subsultus tendinum). Dry spasmodic cough worse lying down, better sitting up. Involuntary urination and defecation. Twitching of every muscle.

Mind & Emotional Symptoms

Jealous, suspicious, quarrelsome. Lascivious mania — exposes person, sings obscene songs, makes indecent gestures. Delirium — muttering, low, busy; picks at bedclothes, grasps at flocks in the air. Laughs at everything. Fear of being alone, of water, of being poisoned. Silly, foolish behavior.

General Symptoms

Twitching, jerking, trembling of muscles. Worse from touch, lying down, at night, during sleep, after eating, from jealousy. Better from stooping, sitting up.

Physical Symptoms

Head

Brain feels loose, undulating. Shakes head from side to side. Meningitis with low muttering delirium.

Eyes

Staring, distorted. Pupils dilated. Squinting. Eyes open but patient does not see.

Face

Hot, red, twitching. Distorted. Lower jaw drops. Grinding of teeth.

Mouth

Tongue dry, red, cracked, hard. Difficult speech. Bites tongue. Foam at mouth. Sordes on teeth.

Throat

Constriction, cannot swallow liquids. Spasm of pharynx. Dry.

Stomach

Nausea, vomiting. Hiccough. After eating feels puffed.

Abdomen

Tympanitic, distended, painful to touch. Colic as if clutched by nails.

Rectum

Involuntary stools from paralysis of sphincter. Diarrhea during fever.

Urinary

Involuntary urination — passes urine unconsciously. Bladder paralyzed.

Respiratory

Dry, spasmodic, hacking cough, worse lying down, at night, after eating, drinking. Better sitting up. Suffocative spells. The cough is the remedy's strongest particular.

Extremities

Twitching, jerking. Picking at bedclothes. Grasping motions. Convulsions.

Dry, hot. Itching, especially in elderly.

Comparative Materia Medica

Belladonna is more violent with hot red face and throbbing; Hyoscyamus is more muttering and lascivious. Stramonium is more terrified and violent; Hyoscyamus is more silly and obscene. Lachesis also has jealousy but is more loquacious and left-sided.

Material Dose Toxicity

Henbane contains hyoscyamine and scopolamine — potent anticholinergic alkaloids. Crude doses cause delirium, hallucinations, dilated pupils, dry mouth, tachycardia, urinary retention, death. Use only potentised forms.
