Keynote Symptoms

Injuries to periosteum, tendons, cartilage, and areas where bones lie close under skin. Eye strain from overuse, fine work, reading. Bruised, lame, aching, sore feeling. Restless — must change position frequently but without real relief. Ganglion cysts of wrists. Thighs feel broken.

Mind & Emotional Symptoms

Dissatisfied with self and others. Quarrelsome, anxious, restless. Contradiction of will. Fretful, sad.

General Symptoms

Worse from cold damp, overexertion, lying down, sitting, stooping. Better from warmth, motion (but not as markedly as Rhus tox), rubbing, lying on back.

Physical Symptoms

Head

Periosteal headache. Brain feels loose. Pressure as from a nail.

Eyes

Eye strain — hot, red, aching. After fine sewing, reading, computer work. Accommodation weakness. Green halos around lights. Dim vision.

Mouth

Thirst for ice-cold water.

Stomach

Nausea, gnawing. Craving for cold water.

Rectum

Constipation alternating with mucous, frothy stool. Prolapse of rectum immediately on stooping. Rectal cancer.

Chest

Soreness of sternum and costal cartilages. Weak feeling in chest.

Back

Backache better from pressure and lying on the back.

Extremities

Lameness after sprains, especially wrists and ankles. Ganglion cysts. Tendons sore, short, contracted. Thighs feel broken. Pain in bones of feet and ankles. Sciatica worse lying at night.

Skin

Warts, flat, smooth, on palms. Skin erysipelatous.

Constitutional Type

Not strongly constitutional. For those prone to tendon and periosteal injuries, especially desk workers with eye strain.

Comparative Materia Medica

Arnica is for soft tissue bruising, not periosteum. Rhus tox has similar stiffness but is distinctly better from continued motion. Symphytum is for bone fractures specifically. Hypericum is for nerve injuries.
