Functional Mushrooms Guide

The functional-mushroom market is projected to grow from $37.9B in 2026 to $84.8B by 2035 (Precedence Research). The 5 most-studied medicinal mushrooms compared side-by-side — what the evidence actually shows, how to dose, and how they stack.

Most important thing to know about mushroom supplements

Beta-glucans (the immunomodulating compounds) are water-soluble; triterpenes (in reishi, chaga) are alcohol-soluble. A dual extract — both water and alcohol — captures both. Many cheap mushroom products are powdered mycelium on grain filler; the label will say “mycelium biomass.” Look for products that specify fruiting bodyand dual-extracted, with beta-glucan percentages (not polysaccharides — that number includes the grain starch).

Lion's Mane

Hericium erinaceus

Evidence: B+ (human RCTs for cognition and mild anxiety)

Primary use: Cognition, nerve regeneration, mood

Dose:
500-1000 mg extract 2× daily
Time to effect:
4-16 weeks; minimum 12 wk trial
Key compound:
Hericenones + erinacines (NGF stimulators)
Stack with:
Bacopa, gotu kola — brain; Rhodiola — daytime energy
Caveat:
None major; taper gradually if anxious

Reishi

Ganoderma lucidum

Evidence: B (human studies for immune; long Chinese clinical tradition)

Primary use: Immune modulation, sleep, "shen"/spirit

Dose:
3-9 g decoction OR 1-2 g dual extract
Time to effect:
4-12 weeks
Key compound:
Beta-glucans + triterpenes
Stack with:
Ashwagandha — sleep; Cordyceps — immune stamina
Caveat:
Mild antiplatelet; stop 2 wks before surgery; avoid with anticoagulants

Cordyceps

Cordyceps militaris (CS-4 strain)

Evidence: B (human RCTs for VO2max and exercise)

Primary use: Endurance, lung function, libido

Dose:
1000-3000 mg daily, standardized to adenosine/cordycepin
Time to effect:
2-8 weeks
Key compound:
Cordycepin + nucleosides
Stack with:
Rhodiola — altitude/endurance; Astragalus — immune vitality
Caveat:
Rare autoimmune flares; discuss with practitioner if on immunosuppressants

Chaga

Inonotus obliquus

Evidence: C+ (strong traditional + preclinical; limited human RCTs)

Primary use: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, digestive mucosa

Dose:
3-9 g decoction (always dual extract for full activity)
Time to effect:
4-12 weeks
Key compound:
Melanin complex + betulinic acid
Stack with:
Reishi — broad immune; Slippery elm — gut lining
Caveat:
High oxalate — avoid with kidney stones / oxalate-restricted diets

Turkey Tail

Trametes versicolor

Evidence: A- (PSK and PSP are approved oncology adjuvants in Japan)

Primary use: Immune modulation (best-researched mushroom for oncology adjunctive)

Dose:
3-6 g daily (standardized PSK/PSP)
Time to effect:
4-12 weeks
Key compound:
Polysaccharide-K (PSK) + polysaccharide-peptide (PSP)
Stack with:
Reishi, astragalus — immune stack
Caveat:
Generally well-tolerated; discuss with oncologist if on chemo

Common stacks

Cognitive stack

Lion's mane + bacopa + gotu kola. Lion's mane drives nerve-growth factor; bacopa supports memory consolidation; gotu kola improves cerebral circulation.

Sleep + stress stack

Reishi + ashwagandha + magnesium glycinate. Reishi for shen-calming; ashwagandha for HPA-axis downregulation; magnesium for muscle relaxation.

Endurance stack

Cordyceps + rhodiola + astragalus. Cordyceps for mitochondrial function; rhodiola for mental-physical adaptation; astragalus for deep qi.

Immune stack

Turkey tail + reishi + astragalus. Different immune-cell modulations — turkey tail for innate, reishi for regulatory, astragalus for long-term resilience.
