Overview

Asthma is a chronic airway inflammation causing bronchoconstriction. Herbal support is always complementary to medical management — never replace rescue or controller inhalers with herbs.

Common Symptoms

Wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, cough (especially at night), difficulty breathing with triggers.

When to Seek Medical Care

Any worsening asthma, frequent rescue inhaler use, severe attacks — asthma requires medical management. Severe attacks are life-threatening emergencies.

General Self-Care Basics

Identify and avoid triggers, use prescribed medications as directed, action plan from provider, good air quality, regular exercise within limits, stress management.

Herbal Support Options

Boswellia for inflammation. Tylophora asthmatica traditional use. Mullein for mucus clearing. Butterbur has research. Licorice (short-term) for inflammation. Magnesium (citrate or glycinate). Quercetin as natural antihistamine. AVOID: Echinacea in those with ragweed allergy.
