Overview

Canker sores are small painful ulcers in the mouth, different from cold sores (which are viral). Often triggered by stress, nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, or injury.

Common Symptoms

Small round painful sores in mouth, whitish with red border, pain with eating/drinking, sometimes fever or swollen lymph nodes.

When to Seek Medical Care

Large sores, sores lasting over 2 weeks, recurrent severe outbreaks, or sores with systemic symptoms need evaluation.

General Self-Care Basics

Avoid spicy/acidic foods, soft diet, salt water rinses, address B12/iron/folate deficiencies, stress management, good oral hygiene.

Herbal Support Options

Licorice root DGL or mouthwash. Myrrh topically. Slippery Elm lozenges. Sage mouthwash. Calendula rinse. Honey topically. L-lysine may help prevent. Address nutrient deficiencies.
