Overview

Dry mouth (xerostomia) results from reduced saliva production. Causes include medications, autoimmune conditions, dehydration, radiation therapy. Herbal and other support can help.

Common Symptoms

Persistent dryness, sticky feeling in mouth, difficulty swallowing, cracked lips, bad breath, taste changes, increased cavities, difficulty wearing dentures.

When to Seek Medical Care

Persistent severe dry mouth, signs of autoimmune condition (Sjögren's), rapid dental decay, review medications with provider for alternatives.

General Self-Care Basics

Hydration, sugar-free gum/lozenges, avoid caffeine and alcohol, saliva substitutes, humidifier, limit salty/dry foods, breathe through nose.

Herbal Support Options

Slippery Elm lozenges. Marshmallow root tea. Licorice root (short-term). Echinacea tincture mildly stimulates saliva. Spilanthes (toothache plant) stimulates saliva. Xylitol mints and gum. Chamomile mouthwash.
