Overview

Common Symptoms

Usually no symptoms ("silent killer"). Severe: headaches, vision changes, chest pain, shortness of breath (hypertensive emergency).

When to Seek Medical Care

Very high readings (over 180/120), hypertensive emergency symptoms, persistent elevation, new-onset HBP, pre-eclampsia in pregnancy.

General Self-Care Basics

DASH or Mediterranean diet, reduce sodium, exercise 30+ min daily, maintain healthy weight, limit alcohol, quit smoking, stress management, adequate potassium and magnesium.
