Overview

The liver is the body's main detoxification organ. Liver-protective herbs (hepatoprotectives) are among the most well-studied botanical medicines.

Common Symptoms

Often silent. Fatigue, digestive issues, skin problems, chemical sensitivity, right-side abdominal discomfort, dark urine, yellowing skin.

When to Seek Medical Care

If you experience jaundice, dark urine, or abdominal pain. For hepatitis testing. Before using liver herbs if taking medications.

General Self-Care Basics

Limit alcohol. Reduce processed foods. Eat cruciferous vegetables. Maintain healthy weight. Avoid unnecessary medications. Stay hydrated.

Herbal Support Options

Milk Thistle (Silymarin) is the gold standard — 80% extract for liver protection and regeneration. Schisandra protects liver from toxins. Dandelion Root promotes bile flow. Artichoke Leaf supports liver/gallbladder function. Turmeric is hepatoprotective. Kutki (Picrorhiza) is Ayurveda's Milk Thistle equivalent. Licorice root (short-term) has hepatoprotective activity.

Pregnancy & Nursing Notes

Avoid liver-stimulating herbs in pregnancy.

Pediatric Notes

Liver herbs are generally not needed for children. If liver concerns, see a pediatrician.

Red Flags

Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), dark urine with pale stools, severe abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, easy bruising.

When to Avoid Self-Treatment

Do not self-treat hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver failure. Many herbs are themselves metabolized by the liver.
