Overview

Muscle cramps (including nocturnal leg cramps and charley horses) often indicate mineral imbalance, dehydration, or overuse. Usually brief but painful.

Common Symptoms

Sudden painful muscle contraction, typically in calf, thigh, foot, visible muscle bulging, often at night or during exercise, brief (seconds to minutes).

When to Seek Medical Care

Frequent severe cramps, cramps with other neurological symptoms, dark urine (rhabdomyolysis), persistent symptoms need evaluation.

General Self-Care Basics

Hydration with electrolytes, stretching (especially before bed for leg cramps), adequate magnesium, potassium-rich foods, gentle calf stretches, proper warm-up.
