Cough (dry or productive), congestion, sore throat, postnasal drip, sinus pressure, chest tightness, wheezing, shortness of breath, excess mucus.
If cough persists more than 3 weeks, breathing is difficult, you cough up blood or discolored mucus, or symptoms worsen after improvement (possible secondary infection).
Stay well hydrated (warm fluids are especially helpful). Use a humidifier. Steam inhalation. Honey for cough (adults and children over 1). Rest. Elevate head during sleep. Saline nasal rinse.
Mullein is a premier respiratory herb (leaf tea for lungs). Marshmallow and Slippery Elm soothe irritated tissues. Thyme is an effective expectorant with antimicrobial properties. Elderberry and Elderflower support seasonal respiratory wellness. Eucalyptus (steam inhalation only — not internal oil). Licorice root soothes throat and supports expectoration. Wild Cherry Bark is a traditional cough suppressant.
Honey, steam inhalation, and saline rinses are safe. Thyme tea and marshmallow are generally considered safe. Avoid eucalyptus oil and strong expectorant herbs.
Honey for children over 1 year. Mullein and marshmallow teas are gentle. NEVER apply eucalyptus or menthol near the face of infants. Elder flower tea is gentle.
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath at rest, coughing blood, high fever with chest pain, wheezing that doesn't resolve, blue lips or fingertips.
Do not self-treat suspected pneumonia, asthma exacerbation, or COPD flares. Persistent cough may indicate conditions requiring medical evaluation.
