Overview

Shin splints (MTSS) are overuse injuries causing pain along the shinbone, common in runners. Rest, gradual return, and proper support usually resolve them.

Common Symptoms

Pain along inner lower leg, tenderness along shinbone, pain during and after exercise, swelling sometimes.

When to Seek Medical Care

Pain not improving with rest, severe localized pain (stress fracture), compartment syndrome symptoms (tight, hard muscles with pain) is emergency.

General Self-Care Basics

Rest from aggravating activity, ice 15-20 min after exercise, cross-training, proper footwear, gradual mileage increase (10% rule), strengthening, softer running surfaces.

Herbal Support Options

Turmeric and Boswellia for inflammation. Arnica topically. Magnesium for muscle function. Adequate calcium and vitamin D. Tart Cherry extract for recovery. Address training errors and biomechanics.
