Overview

The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, energy, and hormones. Herbal support should complement medical management. Never adjust thyroid medication without medical guidance.

Common Symptoms

Hypothyroid: fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity, dry skin, constipation. Hyperthyroid: anxiety, weight loss, rapid heartbeat, heat sensitivity, tremors.

When to Seek Medical Care

If you suspect thyroid dysfunction — get tested (TSH, T3, T4). If you have a thyroid nodule or goiter. If symptoms worsen despite treatment.

General Self-Care Basics

Adequate iodine (but not excess), selenium (Brazil nuts), zinc. Manage stress. Regular exercise. Avoid goitrogens in excess (raw cruciferous) if hypothyroid.

Herbal Support Options

Ashwagandha may support thyroid function (may increase T4 — not for hyperthyroid). Bladderwrack/Kelp provides iodine (use cautiously — excess iodine can worsen thyroid). Guggul has been studied for thyroid support. Lemon Balm may calm overactive thyroid (not for hypothyroid). IMPORTANT: All thyroid herbs require medical supervision.

Pregnancy & Nursing Notes

Thyroid health is critical in pregnancy. Do not use thyroid-affecting herbs without medical supervision.

Pediatric Notes

Thyroid conditions in children require medical management. Do not use thyroid herbs in children.

Red Flags

Thyroid storm (severe hyperthyroid): fever, rapid heart rate, confusion. Myxedema (severe hypothyroid): extreme fatigue, cold, confusion.

When to Avoid Self-Treatment

NEVER self-treat thyroid conditions with herbs alone. NEVER stop thyroid medication without medical guidance. Many herbs affect thyroid function — consult your provider.

Warning:Do not use this site for medical emergencies. If you are experiencing severe or urgent symptoms, seek immediate medical care or call 911.
