Therapeutic Properties
Chemistry
Primary Constituents
Eugenol (40-60%), beta-caryophyllene (15-25%), beta-elemene (3-7%), germacrene D (2-5%), methyl eugenol (variable, 1-15%) per Tisserand & Young 2014
Emotional & Psychological
Tulsi is revered in Ayurveda as a sacred herb opening the heart and clarifying the mind. It eases anxiety, mental fatigue and scattered thought, supporting meditation and devotional practice. As an adaptogen, it buffers the nervous system against chronic stress, promotes emotional resilience and is traditionally used to fortify both physical and spiritual immunity during periods of overwhelm.
Physical Therapeutic Uses
Tulsi supports respiratory health in colds, flu, bronchitis and sinusitis, with strong antimicrobial and antiviral action. It addresses muscular and joint pain through its eugenol-driven analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, supports immune function and aids digestion. It is traditionally used for fevers, headaches and as an insect repellent, though internal use of the herb (tea) is far safer than the essential oil.
Safety Profile
Contraindications
Anticoagulant therapy, bleeding disorders, major surgery, damaged skin; methyl eugenol is a potential carcinogen in high doses.
Drug Interactions
Potentiates anticoagulants (warfarin, aspirin); may interfere with diabetes medications and drugs metabolized by CYP450.
Pet Safety Notes
Eugenol-rich oils are toxic to cats and warrant caution with dogs; avoid topical use on all pets and avoid direct diffusion near cats, birds or small dogs. Causes liver toxicity in cats.
